Dear Cindy.............. I'm Getting Nowhere With Negotiations!

Good Morning Cynthia,

I was recently offered a new role, which I am excited about. I tried using all the negotiating tips I learned during our salary consultation session but the response has been disappointing and they’re keeping the offer the same. They said it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the team if they gave me the higher salary I requested.

I’m not sure what I want to do in this case. I was really excited about the role and now, I’m not so sure.

Hello,

I think you have your answer. You have a bar, a bar that you need them to meet. If they can't meet it, that's totally fine. It's not about you, it's about them.

If you REALLY want to take the job, ask them when down the road they CAN meet you at the salary you require. Can you revisit in 6 months? A year? What is the usual trajectory for raises? If they can give you a road map or some visual that’s great. If they won’t answer the question and you are not ok with the ambiguity, then you should not take the role. Or, you take the offered salary but know you will probably start looking for another position within the year. It’s a tough time to be looking for a job, so think through what your finances will look like with and without this job.

Good luck!
